Emera Maine’s Electric Vehicles (EVs)

PowerSmart Maine Electric Vehicle

Emera Maine supports electric vehicles because they are more efficient: Electric motors convert 75% of the chemical energy from batteries to power the wheels – traditional internal combustion engines (ICEs) only convert 20% of the energy stored in gasoline. They also are more environmentally friendly. EVs emit no tailpipe pollutants, although the power plant producing the electricity may emit them.

EVs reduce energy dependence, since electricity is a domestic energy source produced locally, reducing our dependence on foreign energy sources. They also have performance benefits over gas- or diesel-powered vehicles: Electric vehicles provide quiet, smooth operation and stronger acceleration, and require less maintenance than ICEs.

Emera Maine’s PowerSmart Maine programs will help bring more information to you about your electricity usage and costs and how to become more energy efficient.

Why Electric vehicles?

Cost to Commute to work: Emera Maine recommends the use of Electric Vehicles for those customers who regularly commute 35 miles or less to work because, over the average lifespan of the vehicle, it provides a lower cost way to commute.

Reduce Emissions: If you are concerned about emissions from fossil fuels, using an EV for commuting or short trips under battery fed from the grid can significantly reduce emissions.

Why Chevrolet Volt?

Volt Black

Emera Maine selected the Chevy Volt because it is an extended range plug-in Electric Vehicle (PEV). On a full charge under spring/fall conditions it can run up to 35 miles on just battery electricity, providing economical transportation. Because we frequently have meetings all over our service territory, the extended range provided by the gasoline motor/generator of up to an additional 250 miles fit our needs.
